There Are Two Religions in Italy : There's the Catholic Church and There's Ferrari

Updated: Mar 7, 2024

Will Buxton's famous quote "There are two religions in Italy: there's the Catholic Church and there's Ferrari", perfectly encapsulates the almost religious devotion Ferrari inspires in Italy, particularly among the "tifosi" – a term meaning "supporters" that carries an intensity far exceeding mere fandom. Ferrari to the Tifosi is more than a brand, more than a team, it is an emotion and a way of living. They wear their Scuderia colors with fierce pride, their hearts pounding in sync with the Prancing Horse's every victory. They literally do paint the town red.

Every driver dreams of racing in red

Fueled by the unwavering devotion of the Tifosi, Ferrari's legacy transcends mere competition. It's legacy is etched into the very fabric of this sport - being the oldest surviving team on the grid, every driver dreams of racing in red at least once in their career. Ferrari boasts a lineage of iconic drivers and victories: from  Juan Manuel Fangio's exciting duels to Michael Schumacher's audacious brilliance, the Scuderia has seen and influenced F1 history.

The daring overtakes of Niki Lauda, the wet track mastery by the iceman (Kimi Raikkonen), the legacy of Sebastian Vettel and the sheer audacity of Fernando Alonso's championship battles. Each victory, each podium finish, is a testament to the relentless pursuit of excellence ingrained in the Scuderia's DNA.

However, the journey with Ferrari hasn't been without it's share of heartbreaks. From close calls, strategic blunders and technical issues - there have been moments of sorrow of those in red. But these moments only made the Tifosi stronger, standing by their team through thick and thin.

A dream in red : The modern era

For each ambitious Formula One driver, having a chance to wear the iconic red suit is more than just an honor; it represents the pinnacle of achievement. The modern era of Scuderia Ferrari is carried on by Charles Leclerc and Carlos Sainz (from the looks of it, it might as well be true that you have to be devilishly handsome to drive for Ferrari)

Leclerc and Sainz together are a formidable combination of young ferocity and mature wisdom. Leclerc pushing limits and Sainz offering tactical steadiness, their opposing styles ensuring an exciting season for Tifosi. Their combined skills will be put to the test in the forthcoming season as they attempt to rewrite Ferrari's history and recover their position as the best in Formula One.

Charles Leclerc: Born in Monte Carlo, raised in Maranello

Born in Monte Carlo, Leclerc's destiny seemed to written for the world of Formula One. His love for the Scuderia runs deep, a dream nurtured by both father and son. For them Ferrari was not just a team, it was their dream. This childhood dream blossomed into a burning passion, with his raw and extraordinary potential he made it to Ferrari after finishing his rookie year with Alfa Romeo.

He was the young prodigy who always belonged to Maranello, his daring mentality and aggressive driving style won over Tifosi all around the world. His place in the history of Ferrari was solidified with victories at Spa and Monza, the racetrack's holiest sites. It was a dream come true for generations of Tifosi, who saw in Leclerc not only their own boyhood goals fulfilled, but also the dream of seeing their distinctive red vehicle cross the finish line first, drenched in the golden hues of the Italian sunset.

But Leclerc's journey is far from ended. When you wear the red suit, there is a great deal of pressure and tremendous expectations. But with the unwavering enthusiasm, unwavering talent, and unwavering support of the Tifosi in his corner, Charles Leclerc is ready to add his own chapter to the illustrious history of Ferrari. With a multi-year contract with Ferrari, Charles continues his quest of winning the championship in red with the team he now calls his home.

Carlos Sainz: The Smooth Operator

Born in Madrid, raised with dreams of racing woven into the fabric of his childhood, Carlos Sainz brings a different kind of magic to the Scuderia. Unlike Leclerc, whose destiny seemed preordained, Sainz carved his path through sheer talent, dedication, and a strategic intellect that has earned him the nickname "the smooth operator."

Sainz is a seasoned veteran, a driver known for his remarkable steadiness and a measured approach on the track. He doesn't rely solely on raw speed but utilizes his experience to navigate complex racing situations. This calculated brilliance is a valuable asset to the Scuderia, offering a perfect counterpoint to Leclerc's youthful exuberance.

There is no denying his capacity to continuously produce excellent results under duress. Sainz was Ferrari's ray of hope during the 2023 season, when Red Bull and Max Verstappen were kings. He was the only driver not sponsored by Red Bull to win the Singapore Grand Prix, showcasing his strategic acumen. This win demonstrated not only his talent but also what the "smooth operator" was capable of when given the proper chance.

Everybody's a Ferrari Fan

Even if they say they're not, they are Ferrari fans. Even if you go to the Mercedes guys, even if they say 'Oh yeah, Mercedes is the greatest brand in the world', they are Ferrari fans.

Sebastian Vettel must have perfectly envisioned the future of Ferrari when quoting this famous line. Unquestionably, Ferrari has a certain allure. Even the most ardent fans of rival teams can't help but harbor a secret desire for the excitement of the red, a glimmer of appreciation. Perhaps it's the Prancing Horse's outrageous boldness, its illustrious past, or its great drivers. Maybe it's the Tifosi, whose unshakable devotion is evidence of the emotional bond Ferrari enjoys with its supporters.

Maybe not even the seven-time World Champion and king of Mercedes, Lewis Hamilton, could withstand the red's hypnotic pull. The world of Formula One got a shock when word got out about his switch to Ferrari. Here was a driver who was known for his supremacy in silver, and he was about to assume the recognizable red suit. Did this action validate Vettel's lighthearted claim? Did even the steadfast Mercedes guy, Lewis Hamilton, have a secret Ferrari admirer inside him?

A new dawn at Ferrari

With Hamilton joining Ferrari, the Scuderia will begin a new era in 2025. When you combine his extraordinary skill and expertise with Leclerc unmatched speed and strategic acumen, you have a powerful force. Is it possible for this ideal squad to return Ferrari to the top of the podium? Only time will tell.
